Mahwah -  Referee Reminders:

Picture
Be ENGAGED, ENERGETIC, CONTROL THE GAME, CONFIDENT,  and KEEP UP WITH  PLAY on the field!!

You are in control at all times.  You  are there to ensure the players enjoy the game, player safety, and enforce  the  laws of the game.  You are also there to educate and provide a good  learning  experience of the game of soccer.  Please remember to  USE YOUR WHISTLE and use proper  mechanics as described below.

  • GOAL KICK - hold your arm out for a few seconds  pointing down towards the goal box. (goal kick taken anywhere inside the 6  yard box
  • THROW-IN - Hold your arm out at 45 degrees for a few  seconds to signal direction of throw
  • DIRECT FREE KICK - point at spot of foul and signal  direction  with arm at 90  degrees
  • INDIRECT FREE KICK - point at spot of foul, singal direction with arm at 90 degrees, then hold arm straight up until the ball is touched by a 2nd player other than player taking  kick and then put arm down
  • CORNER KICK -  point towards corner with arm up at 45 degrees
  • SUBSTITUTION  -  Tell coaches all players should be "up and ready" at the half line when ready to sub and stand at half until "beckoned" onto field by referee
  • SUBSTITUTION PROCESS  -   You blow the whistle to acknowledge sub, tell them to WAIT   at half line off field and call the  players   out first, once you see who is coming off the field, you then beckon the substitution(s) onto the field and they are now a player

REMEMBER:  A quick up and down motion with your  arm  will not be seen by players or coaches, so hold your signal for a few  seconds.   This way it also shows your are making  your call with conviction  and you are  confident with  your decision!

  • Use your  whistle - if there is a foul or you need  to stop/restart play, USE YOUR  WHISTLE.  Blow the whistle LOUD and  be PROUD!

    • If a coach does not display the appropriate  behavior on the sideline, remember ASK, TELL, DISMISS.
    • ASK  the coach nicely to "STOP" the behavior
    • TELL the coach  "Please stop or you  could receive a yellow card", "That is enough coach", or whatever you feel is appropriate warning.
    • DISMISS or Caution the coach if  they persist, by showing them a yellow card.

Hopefully that will be it., but if  they  continue with  "DISSENT" and question calls or are addressing you in a loud and  obnoxious  manner,  or persist  with inappropriate behavior, then show
them a second  yellow and  then  the red to remove them from the  game.  If they are the only coach, then the game is over!
